La fórmula general per calcular l'índex de contaminació (\(IC\)) és:

Aquesta fórmula resta punts del valor inicial (\(10\)) en funció del pes relatiu del contaminant, la seva concentració mesurada i el límit màxim permès.
Aquesta pàgina mostra totes les combinacions possibles de contaminants atmosfèrics (de 1 a 6) amb les seves ponderacions relatives. Les ponderacions es calculen de la següent manera:

Aquestes ponderacions reflecteixen una aproximació general dels efectes relatius sobre la salut, basada en la literatura científica actual. No obstant això, és important tenir en compte que els efectes reals poden variar segons les condicions locals i les interaccions entre contaminants.
